2008 Recap

The Church of Life Committee of the First Presbyterian Church of Caldwell had a busy year in 2008. We continued our Wednesday Night Bible Study class with 7 regular members and a few guests. We met until May, when we finished our first 2 books in the Fruit of the Spirit series. After the summer break, we began again with the last of the series with the third book of the Fruit of the Spirit, then started in November with a new series called Road Trip.

The PYGs were also busy in 2008. The older PYGs (greades 6-10) had lessons from the "Haves and Have-Nots" series with Michelle Schiltz teaching the lessons. The younger PYGs were taught by LuAnn Jamison. Approximately 10-15 kids were in attendance. We finished up in May with the annual weiner roast in the pasture (which was nearly rained out, but we managed to get back to town before it really go wet!) We started back up int he fall with a series about Jesus Christ, and with a new addition in our routine - Tyann York took over having a craft every Wednesday night for the kids to make. She has been a welcome addition to the lessons. For our field trip we took 17 PYGs and guests to the Bergaman Corn Maze in Haysville for an afternoon of fun. On December 21st we had our Children's Christmas Pageant, and afterwards we braved the very cold weather to take the tram to go caroling with lots of PYGs and a few hearty adults. The PYGs also sponsored an Angel Tree in the narthex during the Christmas season, which was a huge success - we helped 6 families in the community with all the donations we received.

For the first time in many years the church was the host for the community Vacation Bible School in July. Kyane Berline co-ordinated the week-long event, and did a wonderful job of organizing it. Our theme was "Surfin' Thru the Scriptures", with a beach party theme. Our decorations were wonderful, and we had lots of help from all the community churches. Thanks to all who helped with that massive undertaking - it was wonderful to hear the laughter of lots and lots of children in the church halls again. And thanks to Bob's challenge we raised nearly 300 donated food itmes for the local Food Bank (and, yes, he did have his wife Lorraine shave his head at our final evening program that capped off a very successful Vacation Bible School Week).

We also had several fellowship meals. We served one funeral dinner in 2008 - that of long time member Helen Melichar, with the help of the Assembly of God Church. On September 28th we celebrated our 50th Anniversary of the Church Dedication of our new church building with a special worship program and dinner. To start the Advent season, we had a dinner and decorating party.

As we start 2009, we look forward to another busy year, we are pleased that we have been blessed with our contract paster Bob Barrett, and we hope to continue our good times together at First Presbyterian Church of Caldwell.
